Choosing a Wedding Photographer for Your LDS Wedding

Your wedding day will fly by in a blur of happy tears, laughter, and once-in-a-lifetime moments. Before you know it, the day you’ve been planning for months will be over. That’s why choosing the right wedding photographer is so important—because your photos will become the lasting record of one of the most sacred and joyful days of your life.
In our modern world, we are blessed to have the ability to preserve memories with such clarity and beauty. But to capture the true spirit of your wedding day, you’ll want more than just someone with a camera—you’ll want someone who understands your vision and values.
Why Professional Photography Matters
If it’s in your budget, hiring a professional photographer is often well worth the investment. A professional brings not just a great camera, but years of experience capturing weddings, expert lighting, thoughtful composition, and editing skills that turn moments into masterpieces.
Many photographers offer additional services like airbrushing, photo retouching, or compiling your images into a keepsake-quality album. Sticker shock is normal—but remember, you’re investing in the legacy of your wedding day. A professional photographer can be one of the most valuable vendors you hire.
Understand the Style You Love
Not every photographer has the same approach. Some specialize in classic portraits with everyone smiling at the camera. Others prefer a documentary style, capturing genuine moments and reactions as they unfold. Neither style is “better”—it’s just a matter of personal preference.
Visit photographer websites, browse their portfolios, and see what resonates with your heart. Once you’ve found a few whose style speaks to you, reach out and ask about availability and pricing. Just make sure their rates fit your budget (and yes, we highly recommend using our free wedding budget planner to stay on track!).
Book Early and Be Prepared
Like most things in wedding planning, the earlier you book your photographer, the better. It can take time to compare styles, meet with potential photographers, and finalize details. Take advantage of photographer listings in your local area—especially those near the temple—and look through their galleries to get a feel for their work.
Before your meeting, sit down with your fiancé and create a list of must-have shots. That way, you’ll make sure the most meaningful moments are captured forever.
Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer
When you’re ready to interview potential photographers, here are a few helpful questions:
-
How many weddings have you photographed?
-
Will you personally be photographing my wedding?
-
What kind of camera and equipment do you use?
-
Do you use an assistant?
-
Do you offer black and white, color, or both?
-
How would you describe your photography style?
-
What’s your favorite wedding you’ve ever photographed?
-
Have you photographed an LDS wedding before?
That last question is especially important.
Special Considerations for LDS Temple Weddings
LDS weddings, especially those performed in the temple, have unique needs that not every photographer will understand. Since the photographer won’t be permitted inside the temple for the sealing ceremony, you’ll want to explain that ahead of time.
That said, there are still so many beautiful moments to capture: photos outside the temple doors, group shots with family and the wedding party, and of course, stunning couple portraits with the temple spire in the background.
If you choose a photographer who isn’t familiar with LDS weddings, clear communication is key. Help them understand what is appropriate on temple grounds and what moments matter most to you.
Make Sure You “Click”
Once you find a photographer whose work you admire, it’s time to meet in person (or over video if needed). Beyond skill, chemistry matters. Your photographer will be with you throughout your wedding day—so it’s important that you feel comfortable and at ease.
If you feel relaxed and happy, it will shine through in your photos. But if something feels off, it might be worth continuing your search.
A Note About Budget-Friendly Options
If hiring a professional photographer isn’t an option for your budget, that’s okay. Some couples opt for a DIY approach, enlisting a talented friend or family member to help with photos. Just be sure to plan ahead, set expectations clearly, and make a list of the most important shots you don’t want to miss.
