A Christ-centered guide for LDS couples preparing for their first adventure together

Your honeymoon is more than a vacation.
It’s your first adventure as husband and wife—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to relax, recharge, and reflect on your eternal commitment in a joyful and private setting.

For many Latter-day Saint couples, the honeymoon also marks the first time they’ll be completely alone together—without roommates, siblings, or parents nearby. It’s a sacred and exciting moment in your new life together.

Here’s how to plan it well, without stress.

Decide What “Perfect” Means to You

Some couples picture a cozy cabin in the woods. Others dream of tropical beaches, bustling cities, or a dreamy cruise.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to planning a honeymoon. What matters most is that the two of you choose something together that fits your personality, values, and budget.

If one of you loves adventure and the other prefers naps and room service? You’ll need to talk.
(Think of it as great early practice in marriage communication!)

Budget First, Book Second

Your honeymoon should never put you into debt. And it doesn’t need to cost a fortune to be meaningful and memorable.

Start by deciding how much you can spend — not how much Instagram says you should.
Make sure you include all the hidden costs:

  • Transportation

  • Food and snacks

  • Lodging

  • Excursions

  • Parking, baggage, and tips

  • Souvenirs and emergencies

Once you’ve budgeted realistically, you’ll be better prepared to choose the location and length of your trip.

Plan Ahead (Even Just a Little)

It’s easy to put honeymoon planning on the back burner. But if you can book early, you’ll often get better prices, better choices, and fewer headaches.

Remember:

  • Airline tickets are often cheapest 6–8 weeks before your travel date

  • Hotel rooms fill up during holidays and school breaks

  • Some destinations require advance reservations for excursions or temple sealing confirmations

Even if you're planning a close-to-home getaway or a short minimoon, the earlier you plan it, the more peace you’ll feel going into your wedding day.

Schedule Light

This is not a whirlwind sightseeing tour. It’s not about checking boxes or impressing anyone. Your honeymoon is a time to rest, enjoy each other’s company, and start your marriage with love and intention.

One bride I know said, “We planned three excursions in three days. By day two, we were so tired, we just stayed in our hotel and played card games. That’s still my favorite part.”

Your body and spirit will thank you if you give yourselves permission to slow down and truly be present with one another.

Keep It Christ-Centered

Yes, you’re planning something romantic and exciting. But you’re also celebrating the sacred beginning of your eternal family.

Some LDS couples like to:

  • Attend a temple session together on their honeymoon

  • Start a couples’ journal

  • Read scriptures together in the mornings or evenings

  • Pray together and talk about their hopes for the future

The honeymoon isn’t a break from your spiritual life—it’s a chance to begin it together.
