Groomsmen Duties — LDS Style (and What You Can Actually Expect)

Here’s the honest truth: “groomsmen duties” in LDS weddings aren’t always intuitive—especially when temple ceremonies are in the mix. Let’s simplify what’s actually expected (and what’s optional flexibility), so whether you’re the groom, the groomsman, or planning your wedding party—you’ll know exactly how to serve well and stay sane.

Before the Temple:

  1. Support the Groom
Help him with attire, logistics, and maybe moral support when choosing the ring or managing invitations. In short: be present.

  2. Organize (or Assist With) the Bachelor Events
There’s no “standard bachelor party” for LDS weddings, but if the groom wants to celebrate, you may help plan or coordinate a modest night with close friends.

  3. Handle Attire Logistics
Match the agreed-upon look—rent or buy your outfit, get fitted, and show up looking sharp. Bonus: stay organized so the groom isn’t chasing anyone last minute.

Day-of Wedding — Temple Only:

  • If your wedding is in the temple, you'll wait outside during the ceremony. Some couples hold a “ring ceremony” afterward, where your presence and role matter most.

  • Once photos or a ring ceremony wrap up, help usher guests at the reception, stand near the groom (or in photos), and be ready for toasts if asked.

Reception & Post-Wedding:

  • Be a gracious host—mingle with guests, help guide transitions (reception to brunch), and keep the energy kind and respectful. LDS weddings tend to be alcohol-free, but joy-filled!

  • Support logistics: maybe help corral family for photos, ensure vendors are paid, or assist with transportation.

  • After the Reception: Offer to help with post-wedding clean-up, return rentals, or gather gifts, depending on the couple’s needs.

At the end of the day, being a groomsman in an LDS wedding isn’t about a checklist—it’s about standing by your friend with love, loyalty, and a smile.
