Helping You Look and Feel Beautiful—Without Outshining the Bride

As the mother of the groom, you’ll be in more pictures than you probably expect. There’ll be hugs, temple steps, reception line greetings, and likely a dance or two. And yes—you’ll want to look lovely and feel confident. But you don’t have to book a full glam squad or try to look twenty years younger to do that. Let’s talk about what really works when it comes to hair, makeup, and nails.

What kind of hairstyle should I wear as the mother of the groom?

That depends on your hair type and what makes you feel like your best self. Some moms feel most confident with soft curls or a professional blowout. Others love the structure of a chic updo—especially for formal evening weddings. You don’t need anything overly complicated. In fact, the best styles are the ones that stay put, frame your face gracefully, and feel comfortable all day.

Half-up, half-down styles are lovely if you want something polished but not too stiff. A low bun at the nape of the neck is elegant and timeless. And if you’re wearing a dress with beautiful neckline details, a swept-up style can really let that shine.

Should I hire someone to do my makeup?

If it’s in your budget, a professional makeup artist can be a blessing—especially one experienced in wedding day touchups and natural-light photography. But you don’t have to. Many mothers of the groom do their own makeup and look absolutely radiant.

Think fresh, soft, and refined. A little foundation, gentle contouring, neutral eyeshadow, and a pop of color on the lips can go a long way. Waterproof mascara is a must (just in case a temple hug gets you misty-eyed), and blotting papers or powder are great to have on hand for photos.

Just remember, you’re not trying to compete with the bride or reinvent your look—just enhance what’s already beautiful about you.

What about nails?

Your hands will be in plenty of pictures—holding hands, hugging, toasting, maybe even helping with the dress bustle. Simple, clean nails are always the way to go. Think neutral tones, a soft pink, or a classic French manicure. It’s perfectly fine to keep them short and natural-looking if that’s your comfort zone.

Some moms like to get gel polish a few days before the wedding so there’s no risk of chips. Others go with a classic polish the night before. Either way, your goal is just to feel pulled together—not flashy or overstated.

Final Thoughts

If you're feeling unsure about your look, try everything on a few weeks before the wedding. Do your makeup, put on your dress, and have someone snap a few photos of you. You’ll know right away what works—and what doesn’t need changing at all.

You don’t have to wear the trendiest updo or contour your cheekbones to perfection to be a beautiful mother of the groom. You just have to feel like yourself—respected, radiant, and ready to enjoy the day. When your heart is full and your smile is real, that’s what people will notice most.
