What to Bring When Shopping for Your Wedding Dress

Walking into a bridal shop unprepared is fine if you’re just window shopping. But when the clock is ticking and you’re truly ready to find the one—your gown—you’ll want to be prepared. Think of it like a temple trip: when you bring what you need, the experience is smoother, sweeter, and filled with joy.

So let’s unveil the essentials you’ll want to have in hand before your dress-shopping day.

1. One or Two Trusted Friends

Your best protection against “dress regret” is the wisdom of one or two trusted voices. Invite supportive women—your mom, sister, aunt, or closest friend—who love you, respect your temple goals, and can gently balance honesty with encouragement.

Tip: If you’re not yet endowed, bring someone who is. They’ll help you avoid dresses that won’t work with garments, saving you both time and heartache.

And remember: two is the magic number. A big group can quickly turn from helpful to overwhelming.

2. A Notebook and Pencil

Yes, old school—but so helpful. Use it to jot down dress styles, fabric notes, or even a quick rating system (1–5 stars for length, neckline, comfort, and twirl factor). Later, when all the lace and satin start to blur together, your notes will be your anchor.

3. A Camera or Camera Phone

Sometimes the mirror fibs a little. Photos, on the other hand, let you step back and see the whole picture. If the boutique allows it, take snapshots of your top picks to review later. You’ll see angles and details you might miss in the moment.

4. The Right Shoes

You don’t need your exact wedding shoes yet, but bring a pair with a similar heel height. Why? Because hemlines matter. A gown hemmed for three-inch heels won’t drape the same over flats, and vice versa. The right shoes now will save alterations later.

5. Undergarments

Retailers may offer a slip, but it’s always wise to bring your own. After you purchase your gown, test it with the undergarments you’ll actually wear—including garments. Bend, sit, twirl, even dance a little in the fitting room. The goal? Confidence and comfort from “I do” through your last dance.

A Final Word of Wisdom

Finding your wedding dress should feel joyful, not stressful. With a little preparation—and a short list of what to bring—you’ll set yourself up for a sweet, successful experience.

Because when you walk out of that shop, you won’t just have a gown. You’ll have the dress you’ll kneel in at the temple and step into forever with.
