Fun and Faith-Friendly Ideas for Your Reception

If you’re planning your LDS wedding reception and your first thought when someone mentions a garter toss is “absolutely not!”—you’re not alone.

For many Latter-day Saint couples, the traditional garter removal and toss just doesn’t feel like the right fit. And that’s perfectly okay. You can still include the men in the fun without compromising your standards or comfort level.

Here are several creative, lighthearted alternatives to the garter toss that keep the celebration going and the smiles coming!

Toss the Boutonnière (or the Tie!)

No rule says the groom has to toss a garter.

Instead, let him toss his boutonnière—or even his necktie or bowtie (as long as it’s not a rental!). Line up the single male guests and have the groom toss his chosen item over his shoulder, just like the bride’s bouquet toss.

For a fun twist, announce that whoever catches it will be the next to marry! (Or just wish them good luck—it’s your call!)

Balloon Drop

Want to create a moment your guests will be talking about for years?

Here’s how to do a balloon drop:

  • Fill a bunch of balloons—one of which contains a ribbon or token in your wedding colors.

  • Place them in a net or lightweight sheet near the ceiling.

  • Invite the single men (or all the men) to gather underneath… and then let the balloons drop!

The lucky guy who finds and pops the balloon with the ribbon wins the prize!

Gift Toss

Looking for something simple and still meaningful? Skip tossing a piece of clothing and toss a gift instead!

Choose a small item most men would enjoy—like a brand-new tie, a pair of cozy socks, or some leather gloves. Just be sure to avoid anything heavy or sharp (no watches or pocketknives, please!). The man who catches it walks away with a fun keepsake from your special day.

Race to the Bride

Ready to get your guests moving? This option adds a burst of energy and fun to your reception.

Here’s how it works:

  • Place inexpensive scarves or handkerchiefs on a table at one end of the room.

  • Have the bride and male guests line up on the opposite end.

  • On the groom’s signal, the men race across, grab a scarf, and deliver it to the bride.

The first to reach her with a scarf wins the garter—or your LDS-friendly alternative!

Musical Chairs (Yes, Really!)

Think musical chairs is just for kids? Think again.

Set up a circle of chairs, crank up the music (Mission Impossible, anyone?), and let the games begin! The winner gets the garter substitute, and everyone else gets a good laugh—and probably a few photos worth keeping.

This lighthearted game is great for groups and especially fun when paired with a silly or dramatic song.

What If You Still Want to Do the Garter Toss?

If you’re perfectly comfortable with the traditional garter toss and it fits your personal standards, then go for it! Just be sure everyone (especially you!) is happy with the plan—and that your photographer is ready to capture the moment.

But If You’d Rather Skip It…

The bouquet toss often gets all the attention, but the groom’s moment to shine doesn’t have to be awkward or uncomfortable.

Whether you go with musical chairs, a tie toss, or a playful balloon drop, you can still celebrate, laugh, and include your male guests in a way that feels just right for your LDS wedding reception.

After all, your wedding should reflect your values, your style, and your love story. That’s what makes it truly beautiful.
