A Marriage Meant to Last Beyond This Life

Understanding the Promise—and Power—of Eternal Love in the Temple
When my cousin first told me she was getting sealed in the temple, her non-member father asked, “Can’t you just have a real wedding first, then go to the temple later?” She smiled and said, “This is the real wedding. It’s not just for this life. It’s forever.” That one sentence changed everything.
In a world where even the most beautiful wedding days come with a quiet “til death do us part,” the doctrine of celestial marriage stands as something entirely different—something eternal.
As President Russell M. Nelson lovingly taught:
“Marriage brings greater possibilities for happiness than does any other human relationship.”
“But mortal marriage is only a steppingstone to eternal marriage.”
So, what is celestial marriage, and why does it matter so much to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?
What Is Celestial Marriage?
Celestial marriage—also called eternal marriage—is a sacred covenant made between a man and a woman in a holy temple of God. It’s not just a contract. It’s a promise made with God Himself.
In that quiet, reverent setting, a couple kneels across the altar, and a temple sealer—someone holding priesthood authority—unites them not just “as long as you both shall live,” but “for time and for all eternity.”
This sealing power is the same authority Jesus gave to Peter in Matthew 16:19 when He said, “Whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven.” It’s real. It’s sacred. And it changes everything.
Why We Marry in the Temple
The temple is where heaven touches earth. It’s where we make eternal promises not just to each other, but to God. President Nelson reminded us that,
“The noblest yearning of the human heart is for a marriage that will endure beyond death.”
“That is exactly what our Father in Heaven wants for us.”
For Latter-day Saints, temple marriage isn’t just a tradition. It’s a core doctrine. It’s how we live out our belief in eternal families. It’s how we say, “This love matters. Forever.”
What If My Family Can’t Come?
This is one of the hardest parts of temple weddings—and one of the most common questions. If someone you love can’t enter the temple yet (whether they’re not a member or not endowed), it can feel heartbreaking.
But here’s what many couples have done, and what I lovingly suggest:
Hold a ring ceremony afterward
It’s a beautiful way to include loved ones, express your commitment, and let them witness part of your sacred day.
The sealing is eternal. The ring ceremony is emotional. And both are filled with love.
What President Nelson Wants You to Know
President Nelson was clear and compassionate when he said:
“No sacrifice is too great to have the blessings of an eternal marriage.”
“No blessing will be withheld from any worthy individual who seeks to enter the temple.”
He reminds us that the Lord is merciful, patient, and always inviting us forward. Whether you're preparing for a temple sealing, learning about the Church for the first time, or just wondering what your future could look like—know this:
Your Heavenly Father wants you to experience joy that never ends. And celestial marriage is part of that divine plan.
Final Thoughts
Celestial marriage isn’t about perfection. It’s about progression—together. It’s about keeping Christ at the center of your relationship and inviting Him to strengthen your bond every step of the way.
It’s not just for the wedding day. It’s for eternity.
