Mother of the LDS Groom: Overview

As the mother of the groom, your role in a wedding for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is both unique and deeply meaningful. It’s not just about helping with the celebration — it’s about offering emotional support, spiritual encouragement, and genuine warmth to your son and his bride as they begin their eternal journey together.

While traditions can vary slightly by family or region, your love and example will be a constant they both rely on.

Your Son is Getting Married in the Temple

First things first — this is a sacred time. If the couple is being sealed in the temple, it’s a beautiful opportunity to show support for their spiritual commitment, whether or not you yourself will be present in the sealing room. Your influence — through kindness, patience, and joy — can help unify both families as you all come together in love.

What Are My Responsibilities?

Every family is different, but here are a few things that often fall to the Mother of the Groom (MOG):

  • Be supportive and available without overstepping. This includes offering help with planning, budgeting, or errands — especially if the bride’s family lives far away.

  • Coordinate with the Mother of the Bride when it comes to clothing choices, rehearsal dinner plans, and any joint responsibilities.

  • Help with guest lists, reception planning, and hosting duties — especially if you’re organizing an open house or second reception.

  • Celebrate the bride and help her feel loved and welcomed into your family.

Rehearsal Dinners and Receptions

Traditionally, the groom’s family hosts the rehearsal dinner — a more relaxed gathering the evening before the wedding. Depending on where the bride’s family lives, you may also be organizing an open house or a second reception in your hometown.

Be sure to coordinate plans with the bride and her family, and don’t worry if your reception is more casual or in a different style. The goal is to honor the couple and invite loved ones to share in their joy.

Your Example Matters

Your son is starting a new family — and the way you treat his bride will set the tone for your future relationship. That doesn’t mean you need to be perfect, but small acts of kindness go a long way. Be generous with compliments. Support her decisions. And pray daily for their success.

She’s not just marrying your son — she’s becoming your daughter.
