What LDS Couples Should Know

When you first step into ring shopping, you might think the choice is simple: gold or silver. But just like eternal love, there’s more than meets the eye. Wedding rings come in a rainbow of metals, each with unique strengths, hues, and price points.

So let’s shine a little light on the most popular engagement and wedding ring metals.

Yellow Gold

The timeless classic. Gold won’t tarnish, corrode, or rust, but pure 24k is too soft for daily wear—so it’s mixed with other metals for strength. Most rings are 18k or 14k, with 18k giving off a richer golden glow. (Note: nickel is a common alloy, so double-check if anyone has skin sensitivities.)

Rose Gold

Warm, feminine, and romantic. Rose gold gets its pink tint from copper. The more copper, the pinker the shade—ranging from subtle blush to bold rose. Unique, lovely, and growing in popularity with brides who want something a little different.

White Gold

Gold’s silvery twin. Usually 14k or 18k, it’s alloyed and plated with rhodium for a bright, shiny finish. Over time, that plating wears and needs to be refreshed. It’s the budget-friendly competitor to platinum—beautiful, versatile, and beloved.

Platinum

Durable, hypoallergenic, and 95% pure. Platinum is heavier and more expensive than gold, but it lasts a lifetime with simple buffing. Over time, it develops a soft patina (a satin sheen) that many couples adore. A true heirloom choice.

Palladium

Platinum’s affordable cousin. Similar look, hypoallergenic, and long-lasting—but lighter on the budget. Unlike white gold, it doesn’t require replating, making it a practical option for couples who want silver-toned strength without the platinum price tag.

Titanium

Strong yet feather-light. Titanium is often chosen for men’s bands, especially by those who work with their hands or prefer not to feel the weight of jewelry. It resists corrosion, comes in gray or polished black, and is hypoallergenic. Downsides? It can’t be resized, though it can be cut off in an emergency.

Tungsten Carbide

Four times harder than titanium and permanently polished. Tungsten won’t bend or warp, but it also can’t be resized. Avoid cobalt-blended tungsten (it can discolor with skin contact). Doctors need special tools to remove it in emergencies, so keep that in mind.

Cobalt Chrome

A blend of platinum’s light color with tungsten’s strength. Scratch-resistant, tarnish-resistant, and moderately weighted. Cobalt chrome is becoming a favorite for men’s wedding bands.

Sterling Silver

The most affordable “precious” option. Sterling silver is often plated with rhodium and set with cubic zirconia instead of diamonds, making it a cost-conscious choice. Lovely for a temporary ring or budget-minded couples, but less durable long-term.

Stainless Steel

Simple, strong, and very affordable. Stainless steel bands are durable, hypoallergenic, and polished to shine. Like sterling, they’re often paired with cubic zirconia stones and are best purchased online.

Your ring is more than jewelry—it’s the daily symbol of your eternal promise. The metal you choose matters for durability, comfort, and even how it pairs with the rest of your jewelry.

So whether you go classic gold, romantic rose, timeless platinum, or practical stainless steel, choose a metal that fits your life, your style, and your love story.
