What to Borrow, Rent, or Skip Entirely
You don’t have to buy everything to create a beautiful wedding reception. In fact, many brides are surprised at how much they can rent — from tables and linens to tents, lanterns, and even dance floors! Renting helps you save money, reduce waste, and simplify setup.
Here’s a quick guide to what’s worth renting, what you can borrow, and what you can happily skip.
Think Practical, Not Permanent
Before you sign any contracts or pull out your wallet, make a list of everything you’ll need only once.
If you’ll never use it again — rent it.
That includes items like:
-
Tables and chairs for guests
-
Linens and tableware (plates, utensils, and glasses)
-
Serving pieces (punch bowls, trays, drink dispensers)
-
Tents or canopies for outdoor receptions
-
Dance floors, lighting, and heaters if your celebration is outside
And yes — even your bridal slip!
If your dress has a special silhouette that needs a structured or layered slip, it’s often cheaper (and easier) to rent one from your bridal shop than to buy it. You’ll only wear it once, and most shops will press and prep it for you so it looks perfect on the big day.
Most reception venues can provide the rest of your rentals or recommend trusted companies to simplify the process.
Reception Accessories
Even if your reception is short and simple, rentals can add a touch of beauty and comfort.
Consider:
-
Aisle runners – These can make entrances look polished, especially if you’re holding a garden or cultural ceremony.
-
Lanterns or lighting – Perfect for evening open houses and outdoor receptions.
Budget tip: Many local party rental companies will deliver, set up, and pick up everything for one flat fee. Ask if they’ll bundle your items to save extra trips (and extra dollars).
Tables, Chairs, and Linens
If your caterer or venue doesn’t include them, you’ll need to rent:
-
Guest tables and chairs
-
Buffet or serving tables
-
Linens, napkins, and table coverings
Choose colors that coordinate with your wedding palette, or keep things simple with classic white. You can always add personality through flowers and centerpieces.
Money-saver: Ask about renting plastic or wood folding chairs instead of specialty seating — guests will remember your kindness, not your chair style.
Lighting, Décor & Dance Floors
Lighting makes all the difference. Lanterns, string lights, or chandeliers create a warm, welcoming glow.
Dance floors can be rented for outdoor receptions or cultural halls and usually come with professional setup.
If your reception will extend into the evening, consider adding space heaters or portable lamps for comfort and visibility.
Safety tip: Stick with professional electrical setups or battery-powered lighting to avoid tripped cords or sparks under dresses!
Smart Ways to Save
-
Shop early. Party rentals book fast, especially in spring and summer.
-
Bundle wisely. Choose one company that can supply tables, chairs, linens, and décor — they’ll often give discounts for package orders.
-
Borrow what you can. Ward members, family, and friends are often happy to share vases, beverage dispensers, or serving trays.
-
Skip the extras. You don’t need to rent items guests won’t notice (like fancy chargers or crystal drinkware). Simple is elegant.
Your reception doesn’t need to look like a Pinterest board to feel beautiful. With thoughtful rentals and a few personal touches, you can transform any space into a warm, joyful gathering — one that reflects your love story and your faith.
Because in the end, it’s not about what you rented… it’s about what you celebrated.
