But between costs, caterers, and countless menu options, deciding what to serve can feel overwhelming. Don’t worry — with a little planning (and maybe a few taste tests), you can create a meal that fits your style, your budget, and your beautiful day.
Choose Your Serving Style
Your first big catering decision: How do you want to serve your guests?
Buffet Style:
A classic choice for receptions where guests serve themselves. It’s flexible, cost-effective, and lets everyone find something they love.
Sit-Down Dinner:
Perfect for formal receptions or smaller guest lists. It’s elegant and allows for beautifully plated presentations, but typically costs more per person.
Light Reception or Hors d’Oeuvres:
Ideal for afternoon or shorter receptions. Guests can mingle and nibble, and you’ll save both time and money while keeping the focus on fellowship.
No matter what you choose, remember — the goal is connection, not competition. A lovingly prepared menu always tastes better than a stressful one.
Plan Ahead with Purpose
If you’re hiring a caterer, start early. Ask questions like:

If you’re working with ward members, family, or friends instead of a caterer, the same principles apply — communicate clearly and delegate specific responsibilities. Nothing says “I love you” like having someone else refill the punch bowl.

Avoid mayonnaise-based salads, cream sauces, or custard fillings if food will sit out for long periods. Keep everything chilled or heated as appropriate — and when in doubt, toss it out.
And while we’re talking about safe choices… go easy on those adventurous menu items. You don’t want to spend your first evening as newlyweds googling “how to get beet stains out of your clothes.”

One of the easiest ways to reduce catering costs is by adjusting when and how you serve food.
