Catered Meals: Choosing a Wedding Reception Dinner Menu

So you’ve chosen a plated wedding reception dinner — where guests are served at their seats just like in a fine restaurant. If it’s in your budget, this truly is the most elegant dinner service you can offer. It sets a refined tone for the entire evening and leaves guests with a warm, lasting impression.
Most caterers present their menus in easy-to-read packages, each featuring a main course, one or two sides, and often a salad. Dessert? Usually a slice of that gorgeous wedding cake you’ve so carefully chosen. Menu packages typically come in two or three pricing levels, often ranging from $20 to over $50 per plate.
Yes, it’s a significant investment — but remember, your wedding feast will be one of the things guests talk about long after the bouquet toss. Delicious food has a way of making an evening unforgettable.
Planning the Menu
Many couples narrow their catering choices to a few main dishes and let guests select their favorite when they RSVP. Always include chicken as one of the options — it’s the universal crowd-pleaser for guests who may not eat red meat or seafood.
If you know you’ll have vegetarian guests (or those with other dietary needs), offer at least one option that works for them. It’s about being thoughtful and gracious — while understanding you can’t please absolutely everyone.
Taste Before You Commit
Your caterer will likely offer a complimentary tasting of the main dishes and sides you’re considering. This is your chance to make sure every bite lives up to your expectations (and the price tag). Pro tip: Don’t arrive starving or stuffed — either extreme can throw off your taste perception.
RSVP & Kids’ Meals
When sending invitations, include your final menu choices on the RSVP card and ask guests to mark their preference. (Fair warning — not all RSVP cards make it back, which may leave you tracking down stragglers or making educated guesses.)
If children will be attending, ask your caterer about kid-friendly meals. These are usually smaller portions, lower-priced, and filled with favorites like chicken nuggets or grilled cheese. It’s a win-win for both your budget and their taste buds.
Why It’s Worth It
For a formal evening celebration, nothing beats the charm and polish of a catered sit-down dinner. It’s more than just a meal — it’s an experience your guests will savor.
