If you’ve chosen a tuxedo for your big day—well done! Nothing says timeless elegance quite like a tux. Here’s a quick, practical guide to help LDS grooms (and their wedding party) make the most of this classic choice.

Tuxedo Rentals (or Purchase): Quick Checklist

  • Tuxedo Jacket

  • Tuxedo Pants

  • Formal Shirt

  • Vest or Cummerbund

  • Shoes

  • Socks

  • Tie or Bow Tie

  • Cufflinks

The Tuxedo Jacket

Tuxedo jackets range from one-button single-breasted to six-button double-breasted with tails. A classic single-breasted tux is always a safe choice. Tails, while elegant, are typically reserved for the most formal evening weddings.

Tip: Try on the jacket and the pants together in front of a mirror before committing. Fit is everything.

Coordinating the Wedding Party

As the groom, you set the tone. Your fathers (FOB and FOG), best man, and groomsmen don’t all have to match perfectly, but consistency helps the group look sharp.

  • The same tuxedo color (usually black) is best.

  • Accessories—ties, vests, or cummerbunds—can reflect wedding colors.

  • If someone owns a tuxedo already, it’s fine as long as it coordinates.

Tuxedo Pants

Tux pants should match the jacket in color and fabric. Traditional tuxedos include a silk stripe down the outer seam of each leg. You may also find options with pleats or without—either is fine as long as everyone in the party matches.

Tuxedo Shirt

These formal shirts typically feature pleats and French cuffs (which require cufflinks). They also use studs instead of buttons. Collar styles vary, so make sure the wedding party chooses one style for a polished, uniform look.

Vest or Cummerbund

You can wear either a vest or a cummerbund, but never both.

  • Cummerbund: Worn at the waist, pleats always face up.

  • Vest: Offers more coverage and can add a modern touch.

Coordinate the color with your wedding theme or bridal party accessories.

Final Thought for LDS Grooms

On your temple day, you’ll begin with sacred white clothing inside the House of the Lord. When you step outside for your first photographs together, your tuxedo becomes a symbol of celebration, covenant, and joy.

A well-fitted tuxedo shows respect for the day, your bride, and the eternal promises you’ve made. Stand tall, smile wide, and let your look match the significance of your moment.
