...for Your Marriage License (LDS Bride Guide)

Before you can get your marriage license, you’ll often need a certified copy of your birth certificate—and yes, that still matters even in the temple and in modern LDS wedding workflows. Let me walk you through how to get one without stress:

Step 1: Find the Right Vital Records Office

  • Start by identifying the U.S. state where you were born, then go to the state's Vital Records Office or its "order a vital record" page. This department handles all certified copies.

Step 2: Choose How You Want to Order

You typically have three options:

  1. Online – Most states let you order through official portals or trusted partners like VitalChek. It’s fast and secure.

  2. By Mail – Fill out a state application, include payment and copies of required ID, and mail it in. It often takes longer—sometimes several weeks.

  3. In Person – If you live nearby, you can usually go to your county or state office and walk out with a certified copy the same day.

Step 3: Prepare These Common Requirements

  • Valid ID — Usually a driver’s license, passport, or state-issued ID. The name on the ID should match the request form.

  • Application Form — Available online or as a downloadable PDF; fill it out and review carefully.

  • Fees — Vary by state and ordering method:

    • ~$10–$12 for states like Hawaii online

    • $40–$50 for Massachusetts, including expedited service

Step 4: Submit and Track

  • After ordering, you can usually track your order online (especially if using official portals).

  • If mailing, include payment, ID copy, and a return envelope.

  • Expect processing times to vary—online is fastest, usually under 10 business days; mail may take several weeks.

Getting your birth certificate doesn’t have to be a headache. Once it’s in your hands, husbands-to-be can apply for a legal marriage license with confidence—and you can breathe a little easier as your sacred temple date draws near.
