What to Wear: Tuxedo Accessories for the Father of the LDS Groom

If you're reading this, chances are your son is about to be married—and what a joyful moment that is! As the father of the groom, your presence is not only important, it's symbolic. You represent strength, love, and support. And yes, your attire matters.

So let’s walk through what you’ll need to look and feel your best on the big day if you decide to wear a tuxedo.

1. The Tuxedo Shirt & Cufflinks

You’ll want a formal shirt with French cuffs—it’s a classic, elegant look that photographs well. Add a pair of cufflinks that match your style: silver, black onyx, or even a family keepsake if you have one. It’s a small detail that makes a big statement.

2. Tie or Bow Tie

Ask what the groom and groomsmen are wearing—everyone should match for photos and uniformity. If they’re in bow ties, wear a bow tie. If they’re wearing long ties, you should too. (And yes, pre-tied versions are absolutely fine. We’re going for polished, not complicated.)

3. Vest or Cummerbund

Depending on the tux style, you’ll be wearing either a vest or a cummerbund. Just make sure it complements the wedding colors and matches the formality of your tux. Keep it clean and classic.

4. Pocket Square

A simple white pocket square always works. Or, if you want to tie in a bit of color, coordinate with the wedding palette—but keep it subtle. This little piece adds style without stealing the show.

5. Suspenders

If your tux pants don’t fit snugly or have no belt loops (many tuxedo pants don’t), suspenders will be your best friend. Choose a black or neutral pair—something that does the job without drawing attention.

6. Shoes & Socks

Black, well-polished dress shoes are a must. Avoid loafers or anything too flashy. And don’t forget long, dark dress socks—no bare ankles in sight, please!

7. Boutonniere

This one is usually handled by the florist, and you’ll be given one at the church or temple. It’s a simple way to identify your special role in the wedding—and it makes your wife smile. Win-win.

You don’t need to be flashy—you just need to look confident and coordinated. When you walk your son into this next chapter of life, what you wear will show your pride and presence more than any words can.
